Color Theory Rules

There’s a lot to color theory, and one concept includes when to use active or passive colors. Most people categorize kitchens in the active category, and bathrooms in the passive. Active rooms work well with energetic colors like reds, bathrooms work best with calm colors like blue. This rule doesn’t have to be followed precisely, as you may want to stay away from orange in the kitchen, as this can increase one’s apatite.

Using one color for one room may become monotonous. The key to color is finding the right balance. A common rule many interior designers apply is the “60-30-10″ rule, meaning in for each room, 60% should be one color, 30% a secondary, and 10% a tertiary. The primary color usually applies to walls, secondary to large pieces of furniture or cabinetry, and tertiary to accessories and details like pillows or art.
