Your living room should provide a welcome retreat from the cares of life, a place where you and your family can sit back, relax and simply enjoy each other’s company. But if your living room isn’t the comfortable, inviting space you’d like it to be, your family might rather spend time somewhere else.

If you’re looking for a way to make your living room a place your family wants to be, the following tips will be helpful.

Pick the right furniture

Furniture is one of the most exciting purchases you will make for your new living room design. If you need lots of seating, a sectional is a good choice. If you don’t have the right space for a sectional, you can buy a sofa and a few ottomans, which often provide hidden storage and can be easily moved around. Choose matching side chairs to bring a cohesive look to the room.

Remember than when choosing furniture, the upholstery color isn’t the only quality that matters. Look at the material as well. If you have kids or pets that will be sitting on the furniture, you want it to be sturdy and easy to clean. Also, make sure you give the furniture a “sit test” before you buy. It needs to be comfy!

Warm up the space

There’s nothing like a fireplace to make a living room feel warm and cozy. But you can create that same effect without the maintenance concerns when you have an electric fireplace. Unlike an old-fashioned fireplace, modern electric fireplaces can be easily moved, should you decide to rearrange your furniture in the future.

Choose the right lighting

Some homes are built with only one overhead light in the living room, which is usually inadequate to light the space. Add a few floor or table lamps – and they don’t need to match, as long as they complement the overall theme of your living room. If you’re feeling really ambitious, install a skylight to allow more natural light into the room.

Freshen up with paint

After you’ve chosen your furniture and other matching decor, it’s time to think about paint. Keep the colors light and warm, so you’ll feel relaxed in the room. If you prefer deep jewel tones, try painting only one wall a deep color and keeping the others white; you may find that satisfies your need for color without overwhelming the room.

Add some finishing touches

Pick up any home magazine, and look for inspiration. Furniture, paint and lighting alone don’t create a room. It’s the little touches that do.

Choose a wall to showcase a grouping of black-and-white family photos in matching frames, or go antique shopping to find a special item that serves as a focal point for your room. And if you have hardwood floors, don’t forget to add an area rug that ties everything together.

Your living room is all about you and your family, so regardless of the inspiration you find in other designs, make sure your space suits your family’s style.

Because it’s a room often put to serious work, the kitchen is usually the fastest-aging part of your home. Kitchens come in many different shapes, sizes and styles, and those styles can often change, leaving even a relatively young kitchen looking much older than its true age. It also doesn’t help that kitchens are stocked with appliances that anchor the room firmly in the past.

Recent tech advances in appliances can make these aging spaces even more obvious. The natural solution, for many people, is to take on a full remodeling of the kitchen- outfitting the room with the best available modern amenities. But that’s not financially feasible for many homeowners. In many cases, splurging might not be necessary.

By focusing on some of the finishes and individual features of a kitchen, you can introduce updates that turn back the clock and create a space that’s much more appealing to the modern eye. Here are some kitchen DIY upgrades that can give your kitchen a modern facelift without starting from scratch.

Flooring

Bamboo and hardwood flooring is a popular feature in today’s kitchen. Both options come with a couple key benefits. First, hardwood flooring is much easier to clean and maintain over time. You can re-stain and finish it down the road to revitalize the wood. Additionally, bamboo and other hardwoods can infuse a room with a modern flair.

Refinish Cabinets/Flooring

Instead of tearing out flooring and cabinets — a huge and costly product — give them new life by refinishing them. In the case of cabinets, you have a number of options to consider including various paint colors and new cabinet handles that can give the space a modern update at a very low cost. Whichever direction you choose, a new layer of color will give the space a fresh appeal.

Technology

When you think of new tech gadgets, your thoughts might drift to the living room or rec room. But your kitchen can enjoy awesome upgrades with new gadgetry. For example, controlled lighting can improve the quality of the work space while providing beautiful contrasts that accent other features in your home. If your kitchen is closed off from other rooms, an LED TV could be a great installation to keep you entertained while you prepare family meals. Whatever you do, choose tech features that work for you and your lifestyle.

New appliances

If you can afford to splurge on new kitchen appliances, you will quickly find that upgrades can have a dramatic impact on your home’s appearance. Take time to check out the different features that could upgrade your kitchen such as a new gas range, energy-efficient appliances or an oversized refrigerator.

Countertops

If your countertops are starting to show their age, consider an upgrade to a more modern material. Granite, tile and other stone countertops don’t come cheap, but they can have a long life when properly cared for.

Backsplash

A new tile backsplash can provide a great color contrast that breathes new life into a kitchen. Homeowners have plenty of backsplash options depending on the style they are pursuing. Professional backlighting can also be used to draw further attention to this feature.

Even if you don’t have the funds to initiate all the desired changes at once, you can roll out upgrades over time as your finances allow. Let your creativity soar and you will end up with a kitchen you’ll love.

The Power of Power Tools

Are you one of those people who has reached the painful conclusion that you simply aren’t cut out to handle every project your spouse dreams up or all the repair work necessary to keep your home in tiptop shape? Do you shudder at the thought of replacing your concrete driveway? Does contemplating fencing your backyard make your back hurt? Do you have a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter, a guy who hangs ceiling fans and a handyman on speed dial?

If this describes you, your garage will probably never be mistaken for a shrine to the wide world of power tools.

-

A Challenge is Not a Problem

However, if you consider every project to be a challenge rather than a problem, if you’re the one who dreams up things to do to enhance the beauty and functionality of your home, and if loaning useful, albeit unusual, tools to your friends and neighbors is among your greatest pleasures, then maybe you should take a serious look at acquiring a few additional power tools. They might be just what you need to help you complete the task of refinishing your wood floors so you can move right on to remodeling the downstairs bathroom.

=

What About that Driveway?

Is there a vibratory plate compactor in your garage? If any of your projects involve compacting soil, asphalt or other materials, you should think about purchasing one. You can walk behind the smaller versions, while larger, more powerful compactors can be mounted on an excavator, which probably won’t fit in your garage. You can use a vibratory plate contractor to finish your driveway or patio, making certain that the material underneath is fully stable.

A demolition hammer, or jackhammer, is another useful power tool if you have a reason to tear down walls and/or tear up old concrete. The hammer will do most of the work for you, but it might take some practice and some effort on your part to hold it in place. Demolition hammers are common at construction sites, but you can use them for projects around the house as well, such as taking your old driveway or patio apart.

-

Save a “Hole” Lot of Time

If putting up a fence to enclose your backyard is on your list of things to do, an auger is an invaluable tool to include in your inventory. If you don’t have one, you’ll spend an awful lot of time with a posthole digger in your calloused hands, removing one clump of dirt at a time from each hole. Augers are spiral-shaped tools that, when rotated, drill holes that are ideal for fence posts, flagpoles and basketball goals.

-

Moving Inside

One of the great things about having a wide range of power tools is that when the weather turns cold or rainy, you can move inside and work on your indoor projects. If your home has wood floors, you can begin the job of refinishing them with a drum floor sander. Since these are pricey, costing up to around $4,000 in some cases, you might want to consider renting rather than buying.

-

Another indoor project that might capture your fancy is remodeling the bathrooms. If you do, there’s a good chance you’ll be using tile on the floor or in the shower – or both. In that case, you will need a tile, or wet, saw. You can cut tile with hand tools, but you’ll save a lot of time and potential aggravation if you put your faith in a power tool. After all, tile saws are designed specifically to cut tile. They can cost $1,000 or more, so unless you’ll be using the saw for several projects or loaning it to your friends and relatives, you might want to look at the possibility of renting one.

-

If you store all your power tools in the garage, you’ll want to make sure you keep the area reasonably clean and free of dust and dirt. Central vacuum systems are useful for this job, but most of them are bulky and cost-prohibitive. You can, however, purchase a reasonably inexpensive system that doesn’t take up a whole lot of space; in addition to keeping your garage clean, you can also use it on your car, truck or boat.

-

Safety First

Power tools can save you time and money and make your life a whole lot easier. But they also can be dangerous. You should always protect your eyes, ears and feet when you use power tools, and it’s also a good idea to wear a safety helmet and safety gloves and to read the owner’s manual before you use the equipment. And if you do loan your power tools to friends and relatives, make certain they know how to use them safely.

-

So, what are some of your favorite power tools? Do you have something so unique in your garage that you’re “that” guy?

Remodeling shows are a staple of the design and construction industry for good reason. They make it easy to see all of the new developments in the business and help contractors choose which ones are worth promoting or installing. One of these trade shows – the aptly named Remodeling Show in Chicago – is going to be taking place in October of this year. Here’s a quick look at what’s going to be happening.

The show has exhibits running October 17th and 18th, and presentations taking place from October 16th through 18th. It’s taking place at Chicago’s Lakeside Center at McCormick Place. McCormick Place is a popular trade show and convention venue.

One of the highlights is the Business Skills Boot Camp program, which will be held in the conference center. This educational program promises to help businesses that are doing well do even better. It also promises to help those that maybe aren’t doing quite as well reverse their decline and get back on solid footing.

In the exhibit hall, attendees will see exhibitors like Anderson Window, Ford Commercial Truck, Liners Direct, and a large selection of smaller companies. This is a great time to see the latest and greatest products and services for the remodeling industry.

Online registration for the show will open in June 2013. You can also register by mail by sending your application and credit card information Remodeling Show, c/o CompuSystems, PO Box 6271, Broadview, IL, 60155. Registration is also available at the event. Registration prices are not yet available, so call ahead for this information if you want to register before June. Only remodeling professionals may register; the event is not open to the public.

At many conferences and trade shows, the presentations and exhibits aren’t the most exciting part of the event. It’s the social opportunities that really make these conventions shine. They provide a chance to network and socialize with others in your industry. From a professional standpoint, one of the biggest bonuses is the chance to ask questions of experts outside of your usual geographic area. This allows information to flow without the need to worry about whether it will become ammo for your local competitors to use against you.

To make it easy to socialize with your peers and others in the industry, the Remodeling Show has scheduled several dinners and conferences in and around the convention center. Chicago is a thriving city, so there are plenty of opportunities for you and your colleagues to set up your own meetings as well. Restaurants, clubs, theaters, sports events and everything else you’d expect from an excellent city await your patronage.

One good way to find out all of the events and venues that you would like to visit is to look at a Chicago tourism site. These sites pick out the best types of entertainment for visitors and give a synopsis of what to expect at each one. They will also let you know which subways or bus lines will get you to and from your destination with ease.

img via freedigitalphotos.net

Whether you’ve just bought a new home or are looking to upgrade to a more modern style of living, the kitchen is a common focal point of home renovations. Many real estate agents will tell you that the kitchen is what sells homes, and it makes sense why: Kitchens can vary widely in layout, style and modernity, and even those who only occasionally go to work in that room like to know that it’s outfitted according to their personal preferences.

There are many features, appliances and other details to consider when creating a personalized cooking space. The cooktop may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but homeowners should familiarize themselves with the various options as well as the benefits and drawbacks of each option. Here are some details you’ll want to consider before making any decisions.

Going gas or electric

Cooktops can either be fueled by gas or electricity, and homeowners often have specific preferences when it comes to these two models. Gas allows much greater control over the heat applied when cooking, and many avid cooks prefer an open flame to electric coil heat. But electric cooktops are easier to use and much easier to clean up.

However, the deciding factor may not be your own preferences as much as your kitchen’s construction. You can have your pick of fuel type if your home has a gas line hook-up in the kitchen, but installing a gas line can be very expensive — enough to convince most homeowners to go electric regardless of what they really want.

Fit the cooktop to the available space

If you’re remodeling your kitchen more or less from scratch, you might have more flexibility in where the cooktop is located and how much space it takes up. But if you’re working with certain limiting dimensions, you need to be positive that the cooktop will fit. Since cooktops come in a range of shapes and sizes — including the number of burners it features — you’ll want to take exact measurements of the space and make sure any prospective cooktop will suit your needs.

Finding room for a range

The location of your cooktop will also determine the type of range you use — or, you might choose to locate your cooktop based on your range preferences. For example, a freestanding range can be installed if there aren’t any cabinets flanking the cooktop and range space, such as if you’re installing the cooktop on a kitchen island. Otherwise you’ll want to consider slide-in or drop-in ranges, depending on your space limitations.

Consider speed and quality control

Two specifications that greatly affect the retail price of a cooktop are the speed at which it heats cookware and the degree of control you have when it comes to cooking temperature. Lower-end models will be much more finicky when you’re trying to cook foods at specific temperatures, and they may take longer to heat up cookware and bring water to a boil, for example. For some cooks, this lack of control can be maddening, and they’ll want to pay more to make sure they can cook their food with accuracy. One reason many consumer prefer Whirlpool appliances, for example, is because their reputation for quality often means you can get a high-performance cooktop or other kitchen equipment at a reasonable price.

Of course, you’ll also want to make sure your cooktop is a good fit with your lifestyle. Be practical when considering how you will use your cooktop and choose a model that will be a good compliment to your cooking habits. After all, style in the kitchen is important, but appearance won’t do you any good if its design deters you from being in the room.

Undersized or reduced kitchen space should be a place for creativity rather than frustration, originality rather than headache. And when cooking and dining in a small space, comfort matters just as much as utility.

Often, small kitchen designs are guilty of overcrowding, cramming as many items into a room as possible. But this overcrowding draws attention to itself and makes the room feel smaller. Instead, we’ve listed options that allow you to better merge design and utility so that you and your guests forget about tight walls and can enjoy the meal and the company without distraction.

Dictate and designate space with cabinets or open shelving.

While hanging pots and pans behind cupboard doors and above the range might allow you to fit more things inside the kitchen, this can hurt the aesthetic appeal of a kitchen. When cookware and dishes fill every possible space, the room feels clustered. Consider the use of cabinetry or shelving to generate designated space.

With tall ceilings, build upwards with your cabinets. But leave space between the cabinets and the ceiling to give off the impression that the cabinets are pieces of furniture rather than walls.

Another option for your walls is to use open shelving. When left uncluttered, open shelving creates the sensation that the kitchen is bigger than the square footage might suggest.

Use space-savvy appliances.

When trying to make the best of your space, don’t waste room fitting large-kitchen appliances into a small area. With the many appliance options suited for small kitchens, think about the best way to utilize your space with narrower ranges, smaller dishwashers and reduced burners.

The fact is, you’re dealing with less — fewer dishes, fewer people, smaller portions — so, for the most part, large appliances aren’t necessary. And there are several compact kitchen units designed specifically to house smaller appliances in reduced space.

Your cookware should coincide with the design.

An efficient, comfortable kitchen is detail-oriented. So if you’ve already gone to the work of using smaller appliances and maximizing the space available, the next step is to use cookware that compliments that design.

What’s the difference between cookware that works and cookware that doesn’t? Determine what’s necessary and what fits the theme. Though you might enjoy using large crockpots or deep stockpots, these can feel burdensome and out-of-place in a small kitchen. Try to use as much flat cookware as possible. The right cast-iron design can make the cookware feel like it’s a part of the kitchen, rather than another utilitarian pot.

Find cookware that’s appropriate to the space you have. A small, well-designed kitchen suggests that you’re a person who makes the best of what’s available. And your cookware should reflect this.

Streamline your countertop.

The more smooth, open surfaces you create, the bigger your kitchen appears. This is especially true with countertops. Under-the-counter refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers streamline the countertop so that cooking and eating areas are plumb.

Consider using mirrors as splashguards behind the countertops to further the impression that the kitchen offers plenty of open space.

As is the case with design in all small spaces, the quality and suitability of the decor is more important than the quantity. Take stock of your kitchen — what you need, what you don’t need — and consider purchasing appliances, furniture and cookware that is better suited for a small kitchen.

Many times, we feel like the only way we can fight against pests is to kill them when they get inside, but this is a never ending battle. Bugs and pests like warm and comfortable spaces. That means they will do their best to get in your home. If you only kill them when they get in, all you are doing is fighting a losing battle. The best thing to do instead is to keep pests out in the best possible manner. There are plenty of ways to protect your home, and one of those that you must consider is TAP Insulation.

-

If you have not heard of TAP Insulation before, do not worry. You are not the only one. There are plenty of homeowners that do not know about this insulation. However, once you learn about it, you will find that it is truly a solution that could be perfect for your home.

-

How TAP Insulation Works

Of course, one of the main purposes of TAP Insulation is to insulate the home. It is made from natural materials that are essentially shredded to a very fine, puffy consistency. The material is then blown into open spaces like attic and crawlspace as well as in the walls. The result is an extremely useful insulation that will keep a home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

-

There are several significant differences in TAP Insulation when compared to other blown in types, however. They include the following:

TAP Insulation has pest control capabilities through an ingredient called Borate.

TAP Insulation is the most environmentally friendly insulation option for those who wish to go green in their home.

If you are looking for a pest control solution that offers a number of other positive benefits, then you will definitely want to consider TAP Insulation.

-

Other Advantages to TAP Insulation

In addition to providing an environmentally friendly pest control method, TAP Insulation includes a wide variety of other benefits. When you choose this insulation method, you will gain the following for your home:

Includes fire retardant ingredients making it much more resistant to house fires.

Offers a soundproof option to block out the noises of the world and keep in the sounds of your house.

Because it is blown it, it can work in any space perfectly.

Is completely environmentally friendly from the process of its manufacture (greenest of all insulation materials) to the impact it has on your home (lessens your house’s carbon footprint).

When you choose TAP Insulation, you get something much more than just an insulated home. You get soundproofing, environmental friendliness, fire protection, pest control, and more.

-

Safe for the Whole Family

Of course, many people would wonder how safe TAP Insulation could be since it includes pest control right in it. You may be worried about your family. However, do not worry. This insulation is completely safe for your home.

-

The pest control used in your insulation is Boric Acid. This solution is in many different products in your home, including eyewash that you use to clean your contact lenses. That is how safe it is. You can use Boric Acid whether you have small children or pets without worry.

-

There are many different advantages to choosing TAP Insulation. This material offers excellent, and safe, pest control as well as a variety of added benefits like fire protection, soundproofing, and more. You can make sure your home has all of the advantages of TAP Insulation by having it installed today. Just make sure you choose a professional, high quality installation company for the best work.

Having marble tiles on floor, walls or as decorations brings about aesthetic elegance to the display. The presence of marble tiles itself bring about glow and brightness to the space. Since time in memorial, marble has been a symbol of class, love and affection. Obsession for marble among the human race can be known from the fact that this stone was used in Caesar’s courtyard and has been the supreme choice in the palaces of renaissance Europe and not to forget The Taj Mahal, among the wonders of the world!

-

An exquisite material, marble tiles comes in multitude of colors, and varied range of patterns. The most striking feature is the presence of veining. This brings out the uniqueness in each style. But with love comes care…and it’s the same with marbles. Marble, a derivative of limestone, is an extreme absorbent. This is because of the main ingredient, Calcium Carbonate. It reacts with any kind of acid resulting in pits and scars. Marble, having a chemically unbalanced mixture, is fragile and hence cannot withstand a rather harsh cleaning process. Before the shine of the marble deteriorates, here are a few tips to get back the original appearance:

-

1. Cleaning Regularly

Marble is extremely porous. Hence it permits dirt and stain mark ti set in easily. A cleaning schedule should be made based on regular basis. Marble flooring, as said before, is very susceptible to dirt and sand particles which can lead to scratches or scars. Regularly cleansing with lukewarm water, a soft cloth, and occasionally wiping with mild, non-abrasive detergents.

Minor scratches can be restored using a polishing compound. However, if the scratch is deep, refinishing may be required which involves use of orbital buffing mechanisms to which buffing pads and sanding discs are attached. Acidic cleaners shouldn’t be used. The best option would be to go with the ones which are pH neutral.

-

2. Protection by Polishing and Sealing

Polishing and sealing of marble flooring must be done at least once in a year. Keeping in mind that the floor is clear of dirt and dust particles, the polishing must be done with diligence as it is a two step process and requires a bit of extra effort. Polishing and Sealing will ensure the longevity of the marble floor.

-

3. Remove Etching

Marble reacts with acidic or high alkaline substances very quickly. When marble comes in contact with acid or high alkali substance, corrosion takes place on the marble surface resulting in Etching. Etches appear like scratches but they cannot be removed via simple means. Like deep scratches, they also require refinishing.

-

4. Spills! Be quick

Spills leftover may prove harsh on the marble floor. Hence be quick in wiping it immediately with soap, lukewarm water and clean cloth. Ensure that the cleaning is done with gentle hands.

Marble flooring, or covering it on walls, and displays reflects positive personality. A little care in keeping them clean can do wonders. Marble is a timeless beauty, something that would be cherished forever…

Is your bathroom practical, or luxurious? With the right touches and renovations, you can have a luxury spa-like experience, right in your own home. Renovating your bathroom can add value to your home or comfort to your family, but many of the renovations most homeowners think of cost quite a bit. If you are on a tight budget, there are a few simple things you can do to renovate this very important room without spending a fortune.

Add a TV

Forget reading a magazine when you need to spend a little time in the bathroom. Why not add a TV? You can watch the morning news while you get ready for the day and know all of the important headlines before you go to work, or pour yourself a bubble bath and unwind at the end of the day with your favorite show on TV. You can mount a small LCD TV into a corner of your bathroom to provide access to entertainment. With a small TV and a wall mount, you can easily tackle this project in an afternoon for just a few hundred dollars.

Heat up the Floors

Do your floors need to be replaced? Not only can you make them look great with new tile, but you can also eliminate the shock of cold tile on bare feet in the morning with warming mats. These are small mats of cables that install underneath the tile to warm the floor safely and effectively.

This is not difficult to add if you are already planning to add tile. It just adds one more step to the process. Warming tile mats can work under stone, ceramic and engineered wood floors. To retrofit your floors in a standard sized bathroom, budget between $400 and $700, including the cost of the tile.

Add Light

A small bathroom feels cramped, crowded and simple. Making it feel larger will make it feel more luxurious. Light can make a small bathroom feel much larger. Adding light could be as simple as taking off the curtains and putting privacy glass in the window.

If you do not have ample windows in your bathroom, and the bathroom is on the top level of your home, consider installing a skylight. If there is no natural light available, invest in high-quality bulbs that mimic sunlight, and install a few new lighting features. Again, you can do most of this for just a few hundred dollars, with the exception of installing a skylight, which will cost a bit more.

Include Some Texture

Imagine the most luxurious space you know. Chances are it is filled with texture. Wainscot on the walls, luxury fabrics covering the windows and other textures that invite you to touch and add depth to the space. You can do the same thing in your bathroom. A sheepskin rug on stone tile or moulding decorating the walls are simple ways to increase the luxury of your bathroom space. Something simple like a rug can be less than $100, while it costs just a little to add moulding to your bathroom space.

Luxury is all in the details, and it does not have to cost a lot of money. With the right additions, your bathroom can feel luxurious without adding too much strain to your budget. Whether adding texture or increasing the light, making of these improvements can happen in just an afternoon, and the difference will be immediate. So make a plan, schedule an afternoon and make your bathroom feel luxurious.

Phoenix Real Estate took a huge hit during the “Great Recession”. A sea of foreclosed homes began to flood the market and home prices hit record lows. Luckily, most experts believe the bottom has been hit, and the only direction to go is up. Property values are increasing, mortgage rates are still low and investors see Phoenix as a great place to pick up great deals.

-

This is a recipe for a healthy market and a great time to buy and sell. With the supply of foreclosed homes shrinking, construction is becoming lucrative again. This has paved the way for project development companies to pick up where the market left off in 2005. A time when Phoenix saw a demand for luxury apartments, high rise condo lofts, urban amenities – Phoenix was catering to a cosmopolitan culture.

If you look around in the right neighborhoods, you can see signs of a pulse. One are in particular is the historic district in downtown Tempe, AZ. The progressive college town has always provided a unique balance of culture, science and recreation. This makes it a great canvas for many architecture studios to develop unique projects that are beginning to make a come-back.

-

The successful completion of the luxury, high-rise apartments W6 located just off Mill Ave has enticed other developers to look at Tempe a little closer. It’s not uncommon to see decrepit homes west of Mill Ave being torn down to make way for modern lofts or luxury apartments. These types of projects are encouraging for everyone because it implies a healthy local market. If the momentum continues, Phoenix will rise from the ashes and begin a new life in the 21st century as a modern metropolis.
